  • Laval mental health intervention protocol (PIL-SM)

The Laval Mental Health Intervention Protocol (PIL-SM) is a legal and medical pathway for individuals who have committed a criminal offence and who, at the time of the act, exhibited signs of a mental health problem. This pathway is adapted to their condition, regardless of the crime they are accused of.

This approach lets staff in the legal system and health and social services network uphold public safety while supporting people with mental health problems. These individuals therefore receive care that is adapted to their situation as part of an action plan developed by all partners. Through this protocol, individuals are quickly assessed and treated at the Hôpital de la Cité-de-la-Santé, where they may also appear before a justice of the peace.
