    Vaccination is the best way to protect against shingles and its complications. Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the varicella virus. It can occur at any age but more often in people over 50.

    The shingles vaccine is offered free of charge to:

    • people aged 75 or over.
    • immunocompromised people aged 18 and over.

    These people can get vaccinated regardless of their history of chickenpox or chickenpox vaccination.

    People aged 50 to 74 can also get the vaccine to reduce their risk of developing the disease. However, they must pay for it and fees may vary. For complete details, they must contact their medical clinic or pharmacy.

    The inactivated vaccine is made from pieces of the virus. It is 90% effective in preventing shingles.The protection offered by this vaccine lasts at least 10 years after vaccination. Two doses, administered 2 to 12 months apart, are needed to ensure long-term protection.
