    What is pertussis?

    Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a respiratory infection. It is spread through contact with the nasal or throat secretions of an infected person. Pertussis causes severe coughing.

    Why vaccinate pregnant women against pertussis?

    Through vaccination, the mother develops protective antibodies and passes them to the baby via the placenta. At birth, the baby is protected against pertussis until their first vaccination, scheduled at 2 months of age.

    When should you get vaccinated?

    The pertussis vaccine is strongly recommended for pregnant women during every pregnancy. It is best to get vaccinated between 26 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. Vaccination during pregnancy is safe.

    Who is eligible for the tetanus vaccine?

    If you are 50 years old or older, in Quebec, a booster dose of the diphtheria and tetanus vaccine is recommended. This booster dose is available for free and is essential to ensure your protection against this disease. If you received a booster of this vaccine in the last 10 years, this booster is not necessary.

    Emergency Tetanus Vaccination (e.g., bite, injury, cut): ideally within 72 hours of the incident.

    Emergency tetanus vaccination is available at CLSCs.

    A tetanus vaccine may be recommended following certain types of wounds, depending on prior tetanus vaccination.

    What is shingles?

    Shingles is a disease caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. It mainly affects adults and older individuals who have previously had chickenpox.

    It is a painful condition that causes a rash on the skin, resembling blisters, along the path of a nerve. The rash lasts for 2 to 3 weeks. Redness and small blisters crust over in the painful area. Shingles can also lead to complications requiring hospitalization.

    Who is eligible for the vaccine?

    The shingles vaccine is now free for individuals:

    • Aged 75 and older
    • Immunocompromised individuals aged 18 and older

    The goal of the program is to reduce the number of shingles cases and associated complications. The vaccine consists of two doses and is approximately 90% effective across all age groups, providing long-term protection for at least 10 years.

    This vaccine is available at pharmacies and our local service points.

    Why get vaccinated against HPV?

    The HPV vaccine protects against HPV types 16 and 18, which are the primary causes of HPV-associated cancers, including cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal, and throat cancers.

    Who is eligible for the vaccine?

    The HPV vaccine is offered free of charge for individuals:

    • Aged 20 and younger. For those 20 years old and younger, a dose of HPV-9 generates a sufficient immune response.

    This vaccine is available at all our CLSCs by appointment.

      Other services are offered at CLSCs, including:

      • Review of immunization records and updating adult vaccinations (vaccines included in the Quebec Immunization Program only).
      • Tuberculosis testing, according to the criteria of the Quebec Immunization Program.
      • Vaccination for health interns (updating the immunization record).
      • Post-transplant or immunosuppressed vaccination, according to medical protocol.
      • No vaccinations are offered at CLSCs for vaccines not included in the schedule, such as those for travel.
