Watch this video for nutrition tips if you are having surgery (in French only).
After your surgery
Nutrition
After your surgery, it is strongly recommended that you eat a protein-rich diet. This will aid in the healing of your surgical wounds (see table below).
To avoid constipation, you need to drink 7 to 9 glasses of water a day (unless contraindicated by your medical condition) and exercise regularly. Walking helps your intestines function. If you do not have bowel movements despite these tips, you can try products like Metamucil, which you can buy at any pharmacy. Don’t hesitate to ask your pharmacist for advice.
If it has been 3 days since your last bowel movement and you haven’t passed gas or felt any bloating, please contact a health care professional (your family doctor, a pharmacist, or Info-Santé at 811).
Protein-rich foods:
Exercise
Do not lift weights over 10 lbs. or 5 kg for 4 to 6 weeks after your surgery.
After your operation, you must stay active while following your surgeon’s instructions about exercise. Over time, gradually increase how much you walk until you have returned to your normal activity level. As a general rule, you should not do rigorous exercise or lift weights of 10 lbs. or more for 4 to 6 weeks after your operation.
